More Than Just A Hobby

Everyone stumbles into the gym at different times in life for different reasons. For me, I started working out for one reason and one reason only; I wanted to enhance my hockey performance. See, hockey was my first love. Little did I know that my desire to gain a competitive edge would lead to a life long obsession.

Many people think that fitness and working out is an “extra” activity. The majority of people agree that staying healthy is important, but they would not consider the gym a priority like they would school or a job. In my eyes, however, the gym is life!

Now when I say that, I expect many people to react in a similar fashion. “What a tool!” “Gym Rat!” “Loser!” Despite this, take the time to hear me out before you begin to judge. Over the past 6 or so years that weight lifting has been a part of my life, I have grown an immense amount. Likewise, I have dealt with countless obstacles and struggles. Throughout this time, weight lifting has been more than a hobby for me. The gym has served me in so many ways. For example, in times of emotional turmoil, the gym has been my therapist. Those times that I have felt lonely, the gym has been my friend. When I have just needed to escape the pressures and stresses of everyday life, the gym has been my oasis.

In addition to the gym serving multiple purposes, weight lifting has also taught me a great deal about life and myself. Weight lifting relates to life in a countless amount of ways. It teaches us that pain and struggle is necessary for success. It shows us what kind of people we are. Are you the kind that puts the weight down in the middle of your set when you start to feel fatigued? OR Are you the kind that breaks mental barriers and pushes beyond your comfort zone?  Finally, and most importantly, weight lifting shows us that life is truly limitless. Similarly to life, there are no barriers in weight lifting. When you set and accomplish one goal, there are always more goals to be set and conquered. Whether you strive to up your bench by 20 pounds or to start your own company, as long as your willing to work hard and deal with adversity, absolutely nothing is unattainable!
